Coming into the match as favourites, Fiji started the match against Papua New Guinea at a disadvantage, with one less player on the bench.
But this did not bother Fiji as they proved to be the stronger and more physical team of the two, leading the first quarter 8-2.
Being the smaller side, PNG’s speed forced Fiji back into a half court defence.
Inaccuracy shooting from the field hampered both sides, as Fiji went into half time 18-10 up.
Coming back from a half time break, PNG came out a revitalised team, with two early steals igniting the crowds support, which narrowed the difference to eight points with in the first five minutes.
The top scorer for PNG was EVO’O Maggie scoring 10 points including an extraordinary three pointer, as her side came out a lot more physical with a full court press.
Fiji had an answer for all of PNG’s attempts and NAIVALUVOU Ro top score of 16 points helped them stay ahead 33 – 18 at the last break.
Fiji getting into foul trouble in the final quarter, PNG was energized and tried their hardest.
However with 44 rebounds, Fiji proved too strong and ran out winners 46 – 30.
