Fencing Victoria is pleased to announce the appointment of its State Squad coaches - Nick Mihailescu, Vlad Sher, and Lionel Gaiero - all of whom are Level 3 NCAS coaches, and Rob Di Pasquale (Level 2 coach).
Fencing Victoria will soon be inviting nominations for athletes to participate in the various squads. However, if you wish to be considered for a squad position in the meantime, please feel free to send an email to any of the following addresses:
Vlad Sher - Epee Coach
Maitre Vlad Sher has a degree in fencing and physical education from the State Institute of Sport of Belarus and is a Master of Arms. He has been the Australian National Epee Coach for the last 16 years and has represented Australia as the Head Fencing Coach at the 1996, 2000, 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games. Vlad has a huge amount of experience, having coached a number of Australian athletes to World Cups and World Championships (both Senior and Junior), and the Olympics. Vlad's State Epee Squad training will be held on Wednesdays (7pm - 9pm), and Saturdays (10am - midday).
Nick Mihailescu - Epee Development Coach
Nick brings his 32 years of experience in high level epee fencing and coaching to this role. As an epeeist he has participated at world championships and Olympic Games. As a coach for the Romanian Women's Epee Olympic team, he achieved numerous good results at both European and World Championships for cadets, juniors and seniors. Nick has a degree in Physical Education and Sport from Craiova University in Romania, and graduated from the National Academy of Coaches in Bucharest. Locally, Nick has trained athletes who have won national Cadet and Under 15 Championships and also Oceania Championships. Nick's State Development Epee Squad training will be held on Wednesdays (5:30pm - 7:30pm).
Lionel Gaiero - Foil and Sabre Coach
Lionel also has a degree qualification in Sport Education, and is the youngest Maitre D'Armes ever appointed in France, qualified in all three weapons. Lionel's own competitive fencing career stretches from Under-11 regional Championships in France up to Junior World Cup and World Championship competitions. He was also named one of France's "Champions of the Future". Lionel's State Foil Squad training will be held on Tuesdays (7pm - 9pm), and Saturdays (1pm onwards). Lionel's State Sabre Squad training will be held on Mondays and Fridays (7pm - 9pm).
Rob Di Pasquale - Foil Development Coach
Rob has fenced and coached for more than 15 years. The last two years have seen Rob's foil students dominate the State junior competition scene (both here and in NSW), with podium finishes in National competitions also. Rob has recently completed his NCAS level 2 coaching qualification, and has been selected by the AFF to undertake a five-week FIE training course in Qatar. Rob's State Development Foil Squad training will be held on Tuesdays (5:30pm - 7:30pm), and will commence in May.
