The AFF Annual General Meeting will be held on 20 May, 2012. A number of important proposals will be presented to this meeting, including one from the AFF containing major changes to the AFF Selection Policy and the Australian Fencing Team (AFT) as well as implied (though unspecified) changes to the national High Performance Plan (HPP).
Fencing Victoria does not support the methods by which the current AFF High Performance, Development and Selection policies are interlinked. We are concerned by the lack of opportunity we have been given to consider the proposed changes and consult with our clubs, coaches and other member states on such an important policy change. Upon first reading, the new proposal from the AFF fails to address our major concerns and actually extends its reach to adversely impact the development opportunities of young fencers seeking overseas experience. It is our belief that allowing this policy to be adopted will be contrary to the interests of our athletes.
Fencing Victoria has therefor proposed that while these policy issues are resolved and a more transparent, equitable and performance based policy is developed, a temporary suspension of calls for nominations and contract renewals is both common sense and good governance. Areas that need attention are:
• the absence of any proposed changes to obligations on members of the AFT or the requirements on the new AFS cohort.
• the allocation of points for overseas tournaments not previously designated
• the continued pre-selection of AFT members for tournaments
• the inability to attend certain events without AFT membership regardless of performance
