Tony Lomo from the Soloman Islands progressed through to the final 16 of the under 60 kg mens judo event, before falling agonizingly short of the quarterfinals. The Soloman Islander defeated his competitor Neuso Sigauque 100-10. Lomo who came third in the Oceania Judo Union Championships in April had a strong lead up to his maiden Olympic Games; working on his technique to ensure that he makes his country proud.
It took Lomo just 3:16 to defeat his Mozambican competitor, sealing the win with an ippon, the highest score possible and therefore ensuring he progressed through to the final 16. Although his match against Sigauque showed class and immense promise, Lomo was unable to progress to the quarterfinals. It was a meeting with Frenchman Sofiane Milous that ended the Olympic dream for the Soloman Islander for another four years, as he was defeated 20-1.
The start of the match was one Lomo was unable to recover from as he gave away three points with the execution of a shido penalty. It was a valiant attempt by Lomo but ultimately the slow start and penalty was one he was unable to recover from and he was defeated in 2:47 as Milous executed two waza-aris, ending the match and the Olympic dream for Tony Lomo. Although this time unsuccessful there are vastly encourage signs for the 28 year old and perhaps 2016 will prove to be a more successful year for this judoka.
