Redbacks Celebrate Another Top Season

Summer 2008-2009 was another great season for Warrandyte Redbacks. We had 9 teams fighting it out for the premiership, with yesterday's games seeing us over the line for 3 wins! Congratulations to Jenni O'Brien's Under 18 girls who backed up last season's U17 A grade win, to clinch the U18 A final with a gutsy effort! To consistently be at the top of a competition that has upward of 50 teams entered each year is a fantastic effort and a tribute to this great group of girls and the all of coaches they have had over their long careers with the Redbacks. The talent of this group augurs well for our Venom junior program and Big V women's team. Congratulations also to the U12 boys who also won the A Grade premiership and were undefeated for the last 14 games. They beat a very talented Bulleen-1 line up by two points in the semifinal and in the grand final. There was 114 teams entered in the U12 boys section of the EDJBA, so to finish #1 was a wonderful testament to all 9 boys' commitment and team spirit. There were no stars and no show ponies in this team, just 9 boys who gave 100% every game. A final hearty congratulations to Dale Leeson's U12 girls! This team pulled out a top-rate performance to win the the U12CA grade final. Well done girls!

Commiserations to our other 6 teams that finished the season as gallant runners-up. We congratulate Scott Martini's U10 CB boys, Steve Killey's U12 CA boys, Jack Power's U12 DB boys (CONGRATULATIONS TO JOSH COSTIN ON THE MDP AWARD), Maura Yammouni's wonderful U8C girls, Kelli Taylor's U16 A girls and Nick Peter's U20 A girls.

Finally, I would like to play tribute to our U20 men's and women's teams. These players have finished their junior basketball life with Warrandyte.
Many of them began their junior basketball life with Warrandyte 12 or more years ago and have played upward of 25 seasons and around 500 games with club. In an era where many people shop around for clubs that suit their immediate needs, this is a rare loyalty that we should all celebrate. That these young men and women have also contributed to our community by coaching and refereeing is an immediate rebuttal to all the bad news stories about youth that saturate the media. In my experience the current generation of Warrandyte U20s players stand the Association in good stead for years to come. We look forward to these players continuing their association with Warrandyte in the future; in whatever role. We anticipate many of these players contributing to our MMBL and Big V teams and to ensuring Warrandyte remains a vibrant association. Well done and thank you to;

JESSICA SOLTY, JESSICA BENSCH, CHELSEA CRISP, LINDEL THOMAS, ANDREA PETERS, BRYCE PETALAS, MATHEW BELGIOVANE, JAKE RATCLIFFE, JASON TURNER, SHANE HOLLOWAY, MITCHELL HAWLEY, MATTHEW CLOUGH AND WADE KING.

We applaud you. We salute you.

Doug Hilton on behalf of the WBA Committee.
