Venom Celebrate Two Wins In Mildura

In an amazing display of stamina, team work and determination, the Venom Big V women returned from Mildura with two exciting wins, one of which came in triple overtime.

Following a narrow opening-round loss to Hawthorn, the Venom women ventured north to undertake the competition's toughest road-trip, but this time around they had to play two games in 15 hours.

Saturday night's game proved to be an epic. In what was the Venom's 50th Big V game, the contest turned out to be a game the players, coaching staff and spectators will never forget.

In what can only be described as a marathon coupled with stress, the match went into triple overtime before the Venom stepped forward to grab a 77-70 win in dramatic circumstances.

Being the late game (8.15pm start), all the extra periods meant that the game wasn't finished until nearly 11pm and all of a sudden the pressure was on both teams to back up the following day.

"It was an epic game, something that none of us will forget in a hurry," said coach Justin Nelson.

"The girls were brilliant. Both on the court and on the bench, the support, the noise, the feeling of being a team was enormous."

With game one out of the way, both teams really struggled to get any flow early in game two. Down by seven points and struggling to find their stride, the Venom lifted and quickly shifted into a higher gear to grab the lead and hold it down the stretch for a 48-37 win.

"Defensively we were really good this weekend," said Nelson, adding, "I'm confident that our offence will keep getting better the more time we spend together, but after a weekend like this it's the team aspect that takes on a whole new meaning.

"Every player on the trip did their bit. We had Meg Dargan get her first career start, Bec Heddles made her debut and Jaz Borella returned after missing the first week, so there was plenty to celebrate."

Janelle Lucas (pictured) won the game MVP on Saturday with 23 points and 15 rebounds, while Sally Phillips was awarded the game MVP on Sunday after a strong showing.
