Jets Shoot Down Venom, Mildura Next Up

Warrandyte Venom lost a close battle at Sunbury last Sunday, going down to the Jets 53-65. With two wins from four games, the Venom now face Mildura Heat in two vital games on April 18 & 19, both at WSC.

The loss against Sunbury was frustrating due to some turnovers and missed shots, however coach Justin Nelson remained optimistic and believes his developing group will learn important lessons from such losses.

"It's just another step forwards for us as we try and become a better team," he said.

"We made some mistakes, we lacked a little hunger and we looked flat after the trip to Mildura and, ultimately, we paid the price."

The match was even for the most part with Sunbury pulling clear in the final few minutes to register its fourth successive win.

"Sunbury are a good team and I think they'll have a really good season. They've been together and building for the last few years and we're starting to see the benefits of that progress now. Hopefully we'll be in the same position as we develop in the coming years," said Nelson.

One of the shining lights on Sunday was the form of Carla Sabidussi (pictured) who made her debut for season 2009.

"Carla grabbed her opportunity and played well. It's a great example to the whole group that grabbing opportunities and making the most of them means everything in sport. We have so many players in transition between being a talented junior and becoming a consistent senior, it's all about taking those chances and building on them."

With two wins from four games Nelson is pointing towards a round four double-header against Mildura as being the cornerstone of the season ahead.

"Yeah, it's a huge weekend for us. We've played three of our first four away and I'm comfortable with two wins, but we're back at home and these games are must wins for us if we want to play finals this season. It will certainly be a big weekend for the team."

The Venom host Mildura Heat on Saturday April 18 at WSC from 7.30pm, followed by a return game on Sunday at WSC from 1pm.

Members who are yet to pick up their membership passes at the door can do so at either game.
