Dual Wins For Venom Women

Warrandyte enjoyed two home wins in round four of the Big V women's competition, lifting them to four wins from six games. There was much to like about the wins, particularly the energy provided by a number of teenagers.

In another close contest on Saturday night, the Venom withstood a fast finishing Mildura outfit to grab a 61-55 win with Janelle Lucas (19 points, nine steals), Billie Addlem (13 points) and Jaz Borella (10 points) leading the way, while Sharlene Dalsanto finished the game in fine style with a number of strong rebounds and three big blocks.

In Sunday's game, coach Nelson decided to change things up a bit and used the fresh legs of a number of his younger players to good effect. Meg Dargan (pictured) relished the opportunity, as did Mollie Burke, while Dalsanto and Jess Oram stepped up again with some key plays.

With Lucas (15 points, seven assists) again leading the way, it was the experience of captain Sally Phillips (18 points) that helped push the Venom to another important win.

"Sally was fantastic for us today and showed all the experience we have come to expect from her," said Nelson.

"Janelle capped off another good weekend, and I was really impressed with the likes of Meg (Dargan), Mollie (Burke), Sharlene (Dalsanto) and Casey (Taylor), all of whom showed great form."

"We just have to keep building on our depth and have our players take every opportunity they are given. We ran six players 18-years or younger today. It's a sign that our program is developing and progressing."

The tough start to the season in terms of the fixture continues this week for the Venom with yet another double-header, the team's third in five rounds. First up will be a trip to Werribee on Saturday night, followed by a home game against Craigieburn on Sunday.

"We'll probably continue to change a few things up this week," hinted Nelson, adding, "We know where we are at and know it's a long season. Werribee has started well and will be tough, while Craigieburn will be very keen for a win."
