Chelsea The First Venom Big V Player To Reach The Big 50

The very young life of Warrandyte Venom in the Big V competition will take a significant step this Sunday when guard Chelsea Ransom becomes the club’s first player to reach 50 games.

Since entering the competition in 2007, the Venom have played in two successive grand final series and have won 37 of 54 games, a terrific achievement for a club that only had five junior representative teams on court in 2005.

Now, with the club boasting 25 junior rep teams, a successful senior women’s program and a vision of entering a men’s team into the Big V in 2010, local favourite Ransom has emerged as the club’s first milestone player.

Having progressed through Warrandyte Redbacks as a junior, Ransom grabbed the opportunity to play in the Big V for her hometown and has never looked back, quickly becoming a valuable starter for the Venom.

Coach Justin Nelson says he often talks about Chelsea to juniors at the club as an example of how hard work, a love for the game and a genuine passion for your club can lead to great things.

“I really admire Chelsea as a player, and more so as a local girl who has stepped up from day one and shown every junior at the club that the pathway to senior basketball is visible and achievable,” says Nelson.

“But the best thing about Chelsea is she has achieved through hard work, she’s not afraid to do the hard yards and will never complain when things don’t go her way. These days some players expect things to be handed to them, but Chelsea is the direct opposite to that.”

Not surprisingly, 50 games on, Chelsea is leading the way for the nine teenagers in Venom’s squad this year. In many ways, at 23 years old, she is a real leader to the younger players and they show her great respect.

“I think for the first half of 2007 we hardly heard a peep from Chelsea, but after one bus trip back from Shepparton she hasn’t stopped taking since. When it comes to talking non-stop she is second only to me, and that’s quite an achievement.”

Without hesitation, Nelson ranks Ransom as one of his favourite players to coach.

“I’m proud to say our hunch in year one that she could become a consistent player at this level was spot on. I first saw her playing for the club in MMBL and invited her to join our inaugural team. She hasn’t looked back since.”

Often the life at any club function, or even just at training for that matter, Ransom has cemented herself as a reliable defensive stopper and a tireless worker at both ends of the floor.

“I can only hope that Chelsea goes on to be our first player to reach 100 games and that our younger players keep looking up to her as a leader and role model. I know our team and club is all the better for having Chelsea as a part of it,” adds Nelson.
