Venom Youngsters Beat Latrobe City 64-56

The future looks bright for Warrandyte Venom after a fantastic 64-56 win by the Big V women in a game that saw the club put its youngest ever team on the floor.

With an average age of just 18.6yrs and a team that included only two players who played at Latrobe City last season, it was a fresh-faced outfit that took a confident approach into the game against a team that has been in the top three all season.

Hard running and fantastic defence saw the Venom build an early lead and never look back. It was a true team performance with Janelle Lucas (19 points and 10 rebounds), Sharlene Dalsanto (11 points, 12 rebounds, 3 blocks) and Mollie Burke (seven points, four steals, three assists and five rebounds) leading the way.

Coach Justin Nelson was very happy with the win, describing it as one of the best in the club's short history at Big V level.

"We've enjoyed some great wins in the past, including fantastic victories in finals, but this result was right up there. We were coming of some tough results and had a number of players out, but the 12 players selected really stood up," said Nelson.

With Mollie Booth making her Big V debut and Jaz Borella stepping up to captain the team in the absence of Sally Phillips and Billie Addlem, it was a big night for the club in a contest that included some very positive signs for the future.

"Mollie Burke (pictured) showed tonight why she is playing at this level and that she is ready to be a senior player. She might only be 15, but I've got no doubt she will now be on the radar of every opposition team. She was fantastic tonight," praised Nelson.

The Venom returns home this weekend for a big double-header against Werribee (Saturday at 7.30pm ) and Hawthorn (Sunday at 3pm), the competition's top two teams, a challenge Nelson is looking forward to.

"We've been very clear about our motives this season. We want to build for the future and get as many of our youngsters ready for the bug steps ahead of them. There's not too many teams out there that are winning at this level with a team so young, but we know you have to deal and learn from the downs as much as enjoying the ups.

"There's loads of work to be done, but we're on the right track and I hope everyone continues to support this development phase. It's really exciting to put a team on the floor against Latrobe City that had 11 players who have either played for Venom or Redbacks at junior level. I'm not sure there are too many other clubs out there that could boast similar numbers at senior level."
