Redbacks Update - Our Kids In Action

U9 WR3 GIRLS

Our girls are now in their third season of basketball and with most of them still only having just turned 7 years old, have done an amazing job to come runner’s up in last season’s comp.

When we embarked on this new team (all girls attend Carey Grammar in Donvale), our aim was to give the girls a sense of camaraderie, provide an opportunity for bonding and strengthening friendships, acquiring new skills and of course to engage them in a great game that provides fitness and fun.

Who knew that they would all embrace the game and each other in the most remarkable way. Most girls couldn’t catch a ball when they first started, let alone get a basket in! Now, all are shooting baskets, passing, dribbling, calling out to each other, thinking more strategically about plays and really giving it their all (and to the delight of their parents/coach, done with an unwavering huge smile on their faces)!

With the devotion and guidance of our Coach (Maura Yammouni) at the helm, we look forward to another enjoyable, interesting and successful season of this wonderful game!

U9 WR4 BOYS

On Saturday 2 May 2009 I coached my first ever basketball game. I am coaching Boys WR4U9 with Zeph Hilton. We played Blackburn Vikings at Laburnum and lost 16 – 0. They were lucky to score their final goal on the buzzer. We missed some opportunities on fast breaks but our boys kept going showing a lot of determination.

Vikings finished off with 8 fouls and we were very unlucky that they didn’t reach nine team fouls. Everyone played really well. We will be practicing shooting and Snowball which is our inbound play when we have possession.

Thanks to Craig for filling in for Zeph who couldn’t make it and helping me coach my first game.

U19 WR1 GIRLS

Well it was a great start to another season, with a comfortable win over Balwyn 1. The majority of the team have been together for a number of seasons, winning 3 of the last 4 A1 Grand Finals. Ash Collins, Ash O'Brien, Bonnie Jones,Philippa Birch, Cassie Wilson and Simone Reid welcome back to the team Kirra Solty along with 2 new players to the team in Brittney Gill and Caroline Evens. The girls are looking forward to another great season and playing Bulleen 1 this week, which will be a more competitive game as Bulleen were runners up to Warrandyte last season in the Under 18's.
