It was a huge weekend of basketball at the 2013 Eltham Dandenong Tournament over the Australian Day long weekend.
In A grade competition, two of our junior girls teams made their Grand Finals, the U12-1 and U16-1 girls. Here is a summary of the A Grade Grand Final action.
There is a separate news article with reports from other teams at the Eltham Dandenong tournament - please have a read about all our Boomers junior teams, we've just separated out these A grade reports so one article does not get overly long.
Under 12 Girls - Champions
Our Under 12-1 girls were looking for some serious competition at the Eltham Tournament, as they progressed fairly easily through phase 1 grading in the VJBL before Christmas.
Early in the tournament it was more of the same, as the girls breezed through the pool rounds with large winning margins, and then accounted for Eltham 54 - 10 in the elimination final.
Finally the semis bought a sterner test against a taller and more skilled Dandenong Rangers team. After the game being tight for the first half, the Boomers found space in transition to ease away from the Rangers for a 32 - 18 victory to book their place in the Grand Final against Knox.
Knox were easily the tallest team in the competition, so the girls would have to find ways to score over the tall timber. The final was very similar to the semi, with a very even first half and only a point separating the teams.
Early in the second half, the Boomers running game kicked in, with the girls able to get out in transition and score some critical baskets before the Knox talls could get back in D. Some good passing also opened up scoring opportunities and the Boomers opened up a 10 point lead half way through the second half.
Knox battled hard to try and close the gap, but the Boomers answered every Knox basket and ran out 26 - 14 winners to claim the tournament title.
This was a fabulous effort by the girls to go through such a tough tournament undefeated - congratulations to all the girls and their coaches.
Under 16 Girls - Runners Up
The U16-1 girls had a very tough first up pool game against Eltham, and just came up short of the win 27 - 29. From there, the rest of the pool games were easier victories so the Boomers qualified for the elimination round.
In the elimination final, the girls were up against arch rival Diamond Valley. The team game started to kick in and the Boomers controlled most of the game to win 31 - 16 and progress to the semis against another old foe the Melbourne Tigers.
Well this one was just a cliff hanger, with the game going basket for basket and neither team able to steal a break. In the mad scramble of the last minute, somehow the girls managed to hang on 27 - 26 and book their place in the Grand Final for a rematch against Eltham (Note: the tournament Web site appears to have the semi final result the wrong way around).
The final was one of the strangest games we have witnessed for quite some time - we stand to be corrected, but after something like 8 or 10 minutes of basketball, the score was 2 - 1. The ball just refused to go in the hole for either team - the Boomers especially went to the foul like on at least 10 occasions for one solitary point !
While the scoring did pick up a little, the game remained in the balance at the half, Eltham with a lead of a point. Into the second half, the scoring just never picked up, with handling errors and turnovers the story of the game.
Unfortunately for the Boomers, Eltham managed a couple of key baskets near the end, with the girls going down 14 - 19. A great effort by the girls to finish runners up, but there's plenty of work to go going into the VJBL season.
Well done to all teams for the efforts at the tournament, but now it's straight into the serious business of Phase 2 of VJBL grading beginning next Friday night.
