Championship or Representative basketball (“rep ball”) is a competition for boys and girls in age groups from under 12 through to under 20. It is organised by the Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL) and is played on Friday nights. Age qualification is based on the age a player turns during the calendar year of the season e.g. for the 2008 season, under 14’s are players born in 1995 and 1996.
The purpose of the Junior Championship Programs is to develop the skills of teams, coaches and individual players to the maximum level that their ability permits. The program is designed for those who are committed to achieve, and who are prepared to work hard and make sacrifices to stretch their ability.
The top division of each age group is known as the Victorian Junior Championship League (VJCL), under the VJCL there are four divisions called Victorian Junior League 1, 2, 3 and 4. For teams that do not qualify into the main Championship divisions, there are two conferences that are designed to give younger players experience in playing rep ball, called the North West Conference and Eastern Qualifying.
Bulleen aspires to qualify all Championship teams in the main divisions, but will enter the North West Conference or Eastern Qualifying where appropriate to provide experience for a lower age team. At Victorian Championship level the Club aspires to win premierships and gain representation in the finals series. The Club has a consistent achievement of high achievement in the top grade of Victorian Junior basketball.
At all levels the Club aspires for its teams to realise their potential, to qualify for as high a grade as possible and to enjoy success in their grade. We believe that the more stringent demands of Championship competition provide additional opportunity for development over and above those provided by domestic competition.
The Programs provide a path for players to achieve State representation, to train with special development squads and ultimately to have the opportunity to represent the Club at the senior level in mens/womens Big V teams, and for girls at the elite level of Australian Basketball in our Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) team.
