About the BTBC

The Bulleen-Templestowe Basketball Club Inc (known on court as the Bulleen Boomers) has been operating in the Bulleen, Templestowe and surrounding suburbs of outer-eastern Melbourne for over 40 years.

The Club provides extensive opportunities for players and officials to develop their potential and to excel in all levels of the sport. Participation at junior level in training programs, clinics, tournaments and leagues provides those with the desire and capability to achieve a great opportunity progress through the Club and play as the senior elite level.

The Bulleen Boomers have been successful in attracting large numbers of younger players to the sport of basketball. Our coaching efforts in the early years are focused on understanding and developing the essential skills, the main rules and some simple but important playing strategies. Our Club is also committed to reinforcing that competing in sport is a fun and enjoyable experience and that 'being a good sport' should and must be the norm rather than the exception.

We provide teams for between 1,300 - 1,500 players competing in the Eastern Districts Junior Basketball Association (EDJBA) Saturday domestic competition. Players range in age from 5 years to 20 years with approximately equal numbers of boys and girls.

The Bulleen Boomers, through our Junior Championship program, provides teams for between 400 - 430 players competing in the Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL) Friday night competitions. Junior Championship provides the opportunity for more talented juniors to represent Bulleen at the state level in competing against other Clubs from right across Melbourne and into country areas.

Our first teams have given many kids the opportunity to compete for state Championships and also to represent Bulleen at the national level in tournaments such as the Under 14 Club Nationals and the National Junior Classic. Boomers junior teams have captured many titles over the years and we are very proud of our record for a relatively small Club. Players in Junior Championship range in age from 10 years to 19 years with approximate equal number of boys and girls teams.

The Senior Championship program provides teams to compete in the Victorian Big V competition and we enter teams in the mens and womens Championship and Youth League divisions. To be eligible for selection into the Senior Championship program players have generally progressed through the ranks of the Junior Championship program at Bulleen.

The Bulleen Boomers have also been a member of the Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) since 1978, providing players of the Senior Championship Women's program the opportunity to tryout for this elite national competition. Our WNBL team was finally rewarded for all its hard work by winning the WNBL title in 2011, our Club's first ever WNBL Championship.

Our WNBL program has produced some wonderful players over the years with many going on to represent Australia on the international stage. Our 2011 Championship winning team was no different boasting 5 players who have been selected in the Opals squad (Liz Cambage, Elyse Penaluna, Hanna Zavecz, Rachel Jarry and Jenna O'Hea),  with 3 of these also being drafted into the WNBA (Cambage, O'Hea and Jarry), the most prestigous basketball competition in the world.

We also provide a range of mid week competitions for men and woman of all ages and capabilities to enjoy a game of social basketball and keep fit. Games are run on Monday - Thursday evenings, Friday mornings and a Sunday evening.

Our main stadium is located in Sheahans Road, Bulleen and is the subject of a redevelopment proposal currently before the Manningham Council. We are hopeful of having 2-3 more courts built and a refurbishment of existing facilities. Games are also played out of the Manningham-Templestowe Leisure Centre on the corner of Anderson and Foote Streets (known as Templestowe Leisure Centre (TLC)).

We also hire court time on a regular basis for training and games at the Veneto Club Bulleen, Carey Baptist Grammar Bulleen, Whitefriars College, Templestowe College, Donvale Sports Complex (DISC) and several primary school courts around Manningham.

At the Bulleen Boomers, we are proud of our history within the City of Manngingham and of our achievements on the basketball court at all levels of competition at the local, state and national level. We are a part of the Manningham community and very dependant on players, parents and friends all being prepared to contribute and be a part of our Club.
