AFLQ, AFL Gold Coast Juniors and The Gold Coast Suns would like to say thank you to all Junior clubs for taking part and supporting the Suns Community Camp. The Sign on and meet the Suns players on Saturday at Southport Broadwater was a great success with all clubs having more sign ons at this point than normal. The Suns coaching visits to all junior clubs on Monday went really well with the feedback from all junior clubs being really positive. Thanks to all Clubs and their volunteers for your efforts.

Below is the list of information we require back and the dates we require them by
- Auskick Coordinator Details – Due ASAP
- Conflict Resolution / Leadership / Ground Marshal Course – clubs must have a minimum of 10 participants to host this training session at their club. We are hoping to run these courses in March – Clubs need to provide a preferable date and time in March for us to lock away.
- Dates we can visit clubs to get ALL coaches and team mangers to sign the code of conduct for season 2011.
Upcoming courses – When these dates have been set we will send through information and request numbers
- Kids First
- Level 1 Sports Trainer Course – will be on Saturday 19th at Labrador AFL Club from 8.30 am to 4.30pm for those who are already registered.
U16 Girls Footy – Expressions of Interest
- AFLGCJ are introducing an U16 Girls Football Competition this year. We are calling for expressions of interest for clubs wishing to host a girls team and also for any girls who are interested in playing.
- At this stage Broadbeach, Burleigh, Carrara, Palm Beach and Tweed Coolangatta JAFC are happy to host a team and have between the 2 clubs around 40 girls already interested.
- We are hoping clubs embrace this Girls Competition and help to promote the competition through any networks possible. Facebook and Word of Mouth seem to be the best way at present.
- It is early stages of this endeavour – once we have more information and more clubs and girls interested we will hold a meeting for anyone to attend and provide you with more information. We are hoping all clubs can recruit a few girls to participate and grow out game.

AFLQ in Schools
The AFL Telstra Community Camp with the Gold Coast SUNS within the school community was a huge success in seeing majority of the schools here in our own backyard the Gold Coast.
Within our primary school visits we were launching the “ Are you Smarter than a SUNS player” quiz which ties in with the AFL Quiz which is an online competitions for schools/class groups/teachers and students to participate in against students and schools from all over Australia.
You can register your school or class group in 2 ways: www.aflquiz.com.au or www.goldcoastfc.com.au/aflquiz it’s that easy log onto these site to register your details and have practise quiz with your school before the real competition starts on the 16th May.
All primary schools yesterday participated in the “Are you Smarter than a SUNS player” had a fantastic time interacting with the players in a fun educational environment. The players responses from the visits were “positive in seeing students wanting to learn about the SUNS and also using AFL as another medium to become educated in maths , English and other core subjects.”
We look forward to Queensland primary schools registering to battle against other schools across the nation and showing them “How Smart Queensland Kids are” in hopefully winning the major prize at the end of the year.
Secondary schools saw the players give a leadership/motivation /goal setting and team work discussion to give the students an insight into some of the Gold Coast SUNS team goals , what keeps the players motivated and leadership qualities every player gives to the club.
Students then had open questions to ask the players those questions that never get asked at post match conferences or questions they have always wanted to know about first hand from that player which saw the players open up and let students know that they are just like them, “going through school they missed out on AFL rep teams so keep trying , having a kick with their mates but most of all having fun at whatever they do.”
This camp was a huge success for the school community to get up close and personal with the Gold Coast SUNS before they enter in the AFL competition for their inaugural year.
On behalf of AFL Queensland and the Gold Coast SUNS we would like to thank all schools that took part in the AFL Telstra Community Camp in giving up their class time with their students to take part in this camp.
We look forward in working together throughout the year in AFL throughout schools in 2011 and beyond.
