Cadbury AFL9s Sunshine Coast at Kawana Park concludes this Wednesday night after nine weeks of competition.
This Spring season saw three Sunshine Coast school teams enter the competition with a team of teachers from Chancellor SHS, a team of students and teacher from Caloundra SHS and a team of students, teachers and parents from Mountain Creek SHS.
With two pool divisions in the competition this season Mountain Creek SHS entered a team which played in Pool A- called the Zuma Creekers.
The Zuma Creekers were formed by Paul Menti, AFL Queensland employee and father of Dylan Menti, Mountain Creek SHS student.
With the Menti’s on board it was not long before AFL enthusiast and teacher, Justin Pritchett put his weight behind the campaign and promoted the competition during school hours.
The Creekers had an extraordinary season finishing on top of the ladder with a huge percentage and headed into the Grand Final with only one loss for the season against the Magpies.
They came up against the Magpies in the Grand Final and were narrowly defeated but not disheartened as they played exceptional footy throughout the season and got to show off their brand new AFL9s singlets.
Chancellor SHS and Caloundra SHS were both entered in Pool B as it was their first season of 9s footy.
Both schools improved significantly throughout the season with the girls getting involved at times out-numbering the boys and scoring valuable super goals.
Caloundra formed a strong unit with team captain, coach and teacher Josh Peters leading the way with some prized female recruits and Caloundra Australian Football Club Players.
In their blue on blue singlets the Caloundra SHS syndicate impressed with their enthusiasm, skill level and team spirit that brought them through to the Pool B Grand Final...
The Chancellor SHS team was formed on the back of another AFL enthusiast and teacher, Stuart Jackson who rounded up some colleagues, neighbours and mates to enter a team to wear the yellow, green and navy.
Chancellor improved significantly during the course of the season and was eventual Premiers of the Pool B competition.
The Pool B Grand Final between two Sunshine Coast school teams is a credit to AFL development in the region and the success that school AFL programs are having.
This week will see another clash of the schools with the Creekers taking on Caloundra SHS in the cross-over finals, while the Pool B Premiers, Chancellor SHS will take on the Pool A Premiers, the Magpies.
