2013 Logan Thunder WNBL ACADEMY program

Based on feedback from participants and stakeholders, we have redeveloped the Academy this season to link it more closely to the WNBL program, and to provide greater training and development opportunities alongside current WNBL players.

Key improvements include:

  • The program will run at a central location and time each week bringing all Academy participants together in one place;
  • The focus of this WNBL preseason program has moved to providing players with training in WNBL team sets and structures so that Academy participants will be able to continue training with the WNBL squad on a regular basis;
  • Age and program restrictions for participation have been removed;
  • The Academy will have a dedicated Team Manager to assist you with all aspects including provision of training times, uniforms and information; and
  • A wider range of coaches, including WNBL head and assistant coaches will be engaged to deliver sessions;

Structure of the program:

All Academy sessions will be conducted on Sundays between 10-12.30pm at John Paul College, Daisy Hill.

The first three weeks of the program, commencing Sunday 14th July will consist of open sessions for any Academy participant/hopeful to attend. These will be focussed on game situations, scrimmages and skills assessment. At the end of these four weeks, the train on squad will move to the initial WNBL preseason program.

The next four weeks of the program, commencing Sunday 4th August, will be the start of the WNBL preseason for Academy players during which time you will be trained in the WNBL playbook to prepare those players who will be able to participate in the full WNBL preseason. Brisbane based WNBL players are expected to attend these sessions to train alongside Academy participants.

On the week commencing Sunday 1 September the full WNBL preseason program will commence and selected Academy players will be invited to participate in the full preseason schedule. Other Academy participants not participating in the full schedule due to other commitments will continue training on Sundays to ensure they are at a level to enable them to be called into the WNBL program as needed. During this preseason program up to four squad positions will be offered to Academy participants for the upcoming WNBL season (the WNBL squad is anticipated to comprise of 16 players). Further development opportunities will be available for Academy players at this time.

If you wish to confirm your intention to participate in this year’s program, please contact the Academy Team Manager Linda Ambrose directly on loganthunderwnbl@gmail.com or 0427 010 354 prior to 10th July.
