Brent Renouf's young AFL career took a rare downward turn tonight as that of fellow Gold Coaster Brad Moran and former Queensland U18 teammate Shaun Hampson took a turn for the better.
Renouf, an AFL premiership player with Hawthorn in just his eighth AFL game last season, has lost his spot for the first time since then.
With Grant Birchall returning from injury to a bolster a backline propped up last weekend by specialist ruckman Robert Campbell, Campbell and Jason Taylor will share the ruck duties against Essendon at Docklands Friday night, leaving 14-gamer Renouf to play with Box Hill in the VFL
But Moran, unable to break into the Adelaide side since the finals last year, will add to his 10-game AFL career after being named in the first ruck for Sunday's clash with the Western Bulldogs at AAMI Stadium.
And Hampson, a 12-gamer at Carlton. has broken into the Blues side for the first time since Round 22 last year and will line up against Fremantle at Carrara Saturday night.
In other Queensland-related selection news, Dayne Beams has been ruled out of the Collingwood side to play St.Kilda at Docklands on Monday night with a groin injury, Tom Williams has been slotted straight back into the Bulldogs side after a one-week injury lay-off, and for the second week in a row David Armitage is in contention for a recall to the St.Kilda line-up.
North Melbourne leadership group member Daniel Pratt will miss Saturday night's Docklands clash with Port Adelaide following minor knee surgery on Wednesday. The Roos are hopeful he will resume in three weeks.
But Jake Spencer, presented with a possible opening for a return to the Melbourne side, was overlooked despite the loss of fellow ruckman John Meesen for the rest of the season. Spencer, himself sidelined for the past fortnight with a foot problem, will resume in the VFL if he is passed fit.
And Jesse White, officially left out of the Sydney side last week through illness before playing with their reserves, has been unable to win back his senior spot that was taken by Canadian rugby convert Mike Pyke. White was named as an emergency.
In other AFL selection highlights, Ben Cousins, Cameron Ling, Tom Harley and Daniel Wells will return this weekend, Setanta O'hAilpin and Ashley Hansen are among the casualties, and young Blue Chris Yarran, selection No.6 in last year's national draft, will make his AFL debut.
Essendon brought in Jay Neagle, Tom Bellchambers and Bachar Houli to replace the injured Dustin Fletcher (leg) and Leroy Jetta (knee), and Scott Lucas, who will try to re-discover form in the VFL with the Bendigo Bombers. Queenslander John Williams is an emergency for the second week in a row.
Hawthorn chose not to risk Stephen Gilham or Xavier Ellis, and recalled Ben McGlynn and Cameron Stokes with Birchall after losing Brent Guerra (back) to injury. Jarryd Morton and Renouf were the omissions.
Geelong, without Gary Ablett for Saturday's Skilled Stadium clash an unchanged Swans, welcomed the inclusion of captain Harley for his first game of the season after a knee injury, and deputy Ling from an achilles problem.David Johnson, was omitted.
Richmond, without Matthew Richardson for 12 weeks, welcomes back the high-profile trio of Cousins, Nathan Brown and Troy Simmonds for Saturday afternoon's MCG clash with an unchanged Brisbane Lions but dropped Jordan McMahon and Mitch Morton.
Daniel Wells and Matt Campbell return from injury to provide a welcome injection of pace for North Melbourne against Port Adelaide at Docklands on Saturday. Ben Ross and Todd Goldstein also have been promoted as Levi Greenwood, Sam Power and Ed Lower were omitted.
Port Adelaide will give former Geelong midfielder Jason Davenport his AFL debut in place of the injured Hamish Hartlett (hamstring)..
Carlton surprised with the selection of Yarran who was held out of the Bullants side with hamstring soreness last week. The mercurial goalsneak comes in with Hampson, defender Mark Austin and onballer Richard Hadley as Andrew Carrazzo (hamstring) was ruled unfit. Ryan Houlihan, Greg Bentley and O'hAilpin were dropped.
Fremantle lost Ryan Crowley to a foot injury, but has promoted rookie Luke Pratt for his AFL debut.
Adelaide dropped Jonathon Griffin and Myke Cook as Moran was slotted into the starting line-up and Robert Shirley, Chris Knights, Brad Symes and Ivan Maric were named on a seven-man bench.
Bulldogs added Callan Ward and forgotten forward Scott Welsh among their bench group.
West Coast dropped Hansen and named Josh Kennedy at centre half-forward for Sunday's home encounter against the Demons. Brent Staker was ruled out with a hand injury while Jamie McNamara, Will Schofield, Scott Selwood and Matt Spangher appear on an extended bench.
Melbourne added Jack Grimes, Michael Newton, Neville Jetta and Kyle Cheney to an expanded bench.
Collingwood, without the suspended John Anthony, looks poised to recall Heath Shaw and Anthony Rocca for the Monday night blockbuster against St Kilda after the pair, late withdrawals last week, were named among five potential changes. First-round draft pick Steele Sidebottom is in line for his AFL debut as Ben Reid and Danny Stanley were also elevated to the senior match squad.
Armitage, Ben McEvoy and Raphael Clarke are the possible inclusions at St.Kilda.
