Bullets bid to return to NBL

THE fate of Brisbane's bid to re-enter the NBL could be known in a matter of weeks.

Basketball Australia chief executive Larry Sengstock yesterday met representatives of a new syndicate at Auchenflower Stadium, where he once starred as a player in the national league.

"There is no exact deadline set in concrete, but a decision has to be made about a Brisbane team before the end of the year so the NBL can start planning for the 2012-13 season," Sengstock said.

"I'm confident that something can be done in the next few weeks.

"In my talks with the consortium, which has links back to the Brisbane (basketball) association, I'm convinced now more than ever a reborn Bullets team will be up and running next year."

The Bullets, a foundation club in the NBL, returned their license to play in the competition on June 30, 2008, after former owner Eddy Groves struck financial troubles.

"The meeting today has only reinforced my belief that a Brisbane Bullets team would not only survive, but thrive in the city's professional sporting landscape," Sengstock said.

The push to revive an NBL franchise in Brisbane comes with the Gold Coast Blaze agreeing to play two regular season games next summer at the Brisbane Convention Centre against the Cairns Taipans on October 16 and Townsville Crocodiles on February 19.

Returning to the Brisbane Convention Centre will hold fond memories for Blaze head coach Joey Wright, who won a championship ring in 2007 when in charge of the Bullets.

Brisbane will also host game two of the Oceania London Games qualifiers against New Zealand on September 9.
