Veal re-called to Opals Training Camp

Brisbane Capitals QBL player/coach Kristen Veal has been selected to the Australian Opals training camp under new head coach Brendan Joyce.

The 34-member squad will assemble at Basketball Australia’s National Centre of Excellence at the AIS in Canberra from Sunday, from where teams will be selected to attend both the Opals upcoming tour of China and the World University Games in Russia.

Veal, who is in her second year with the Brisbane Capitals QBL program has enjoyed success at all levels of basketball both nationally and internationally. She has won three WNBL Championships while playing for Canberra Capitals, Sydney Uni Flames and most recently the Logan Thunder.

In 2001 she was drafted in the first round of the WNBA and was the youngest player at the time to play in the WNBA.

This is not Veal’s first taste of National representation. In 1999 she was a member of the Opals and again in 2000. During that Olympic campaign she was playing behind Michelle Timms and was named to the early Olympic selection squads before eventually being cut.

She was again a member of the Opals in 2001 but missed out on representing Australia at the 2002 FIBA World Championships because of a knee injury but was a member of the Opals in 2005.

In 2011 Veal participated in the Olympic qualification competition and played a three game test series against China played in Queensland and last year participated in the National Team Training Camp held mid-May at the AIS where she was a student of the game in 1997 and 1988.

Veal is currently player/coaching for the Brisbane Capitals QBL women’s team (2 – 1) and has suffered a slight hamstring injury but is still hopeful of participating in the camp pending medical clearance.
