Capitals SBL Weave Magic Over the Wizards

The Brisbane Capitals SBL teams have weaved their own magic over cross-town rivals the Northside Wizards this afternoon with two convincing wins at Southpine Sports Complex, Brendale.

The women’s team bounced back into the winner’s circle with a commanding 33-point win in yet another display of “team” basketball with four players scoring in double figures.

Nicole Fyfe burst out of the blocks opening the team’s account with a long-range three-point bomb followed by a three-point play and a basketball to lead all scorers at the first break with 8 points.

Kate Heal then joined the party with 19 points, Emma Glenn with 14 points and Olivia Griffith adding 11 points.

The Capitals led at all breaks on the way to the easy win.

“There’s no such thing as an easy win,” Capitals head coach Fiona Hannan said.

“We were disappointed last week and really want to make amends this week and I think we did that and I’m proud of the turnaround.”

The Capitals now secure a 3 – 1 record heading into a bye next weekend.

The men’s team kept their winning streak alive with a hard-fought 66 – 54 win to remain undefeated after four games.

Guard Tim Weigh started the game on fire scoring 9 of the teams 16 first quarter points with his team holding a slender 33 – 32 lead at the main break. A low scoring 7 – 12 third period saw the Capitals extend the lead to 6-points at the last break and with scores tied with just 2 minutes left on the clock, the game looked like it was heading towards a repeat of last weeks overtime game.

With time running out the Wizards were forced to foul and the Capitals made them pay from the free throw line with both Nick Chia and Jacob Wilson each hitting 3 out of 3 to seal the win.

“It was definitely a tough game. There are no easy teams so you have to bring you’re a game each week. There were a few things today that we’ll need to work on but the job is not done yet. We have to get tomorrow,” head coach Michael Van Dongen said.

The Capitals play a second game tomorrow morning at Logan Metro against West Logan to complete the weekend’s round before returning home next Saturday afternoon at 3pm for a TOP OF THE TABLE CLASH against the only other undefeated team in the SBL, the Warwick Wildcats.
