Capitals QBL Men split Re-Match with Wizards

The Northside Wizards have exacted revenge towards cross-town rivals the Brisbane Capitals, turning around last Round’s 18 points loss at Brendale into last Saturday night’s 71 – 86 win at NAB Stadium, Auchenflower.

In a physical and at some points, spiteful affair the Wizards took the early advantage at the first break leading 27 – 13. Former Capitals player Simon Taylor opened the account for the visitors right from the tip with a right-handed layup to get proceedings underway.

The Capitals finally woke up in the second period pouring in 25 points but still allowing the Wizards to added a further 19 points while their chief playmaker Heath Gameren lead the first half with 12 points to lead all scorers.

At the main break the Wizards led 48 – 36 however the halftime break worked wonders for the Capitals and Round 3’s QBL Player of the Week joined the party with 9 third quarter points and bringing his Capitals to within a single point of the Wizards with only a few minutes left in the third term.

The Wizards lead was cut to just 6 points and much like last week at Brendale Sports Complex, home of the Wizards, the stage was set for an arm-wrestle finish. But this week, the Wizards were ready for ay ambush the Capitals through at them, able to maintain a 5 – 8 point buffer throughout the final period running out with the 15 points lead.

“Bitterly disappointed. That’s all I can say,” head coach Geoff Tarrant said.

“We had a perfect opportunity to ascend ourselves in the competition with a win tonight, but we were far from our best and they (Wizards) took full advantage,” he said.

Dusty Rychart was his ever-reliable best leading with 18 points and 8 rebounds, Drew Eisinger chipped in with 15 points and Ryan Jeffries added 14-second half points.

For the visitors, Steven Broom led with 24 points and Heath Gameren added 22 points. The Wizards were without the services of Tommy Ammar however did have Marques Whippy cleared to play.

Despite the disappointing loss, the result still holds significant bearings.

As the Capitals won the round 4 game by 18 points and the Wizards won the round 5 game by 15 points, as they are in the same pool, should both teams end the season on the same win/loss record, this count back and three-point difference will prove extremely valuable to the Capitals.

Just like the Capitals SBL and QBL women, the men also host the Suncoast Clippers this Saturday night at NAB Stadium tipping of at 7:30pm.

The Clippers currently has a 2 – 2 record but do board 2 very good American imports so it does created a mouth-watering clash to end a huge day of basketball at NAB Stadium, Auchenflower.
