Referee Barry McLeod puts in 35 years as basketball referee

BARRY McLeod's love affair with basketball started when he was playing Bulimba Cup rugby league for Ipswich.

A handy utility who played halfback, five-eighth or fullback, McLeod won a couple of premierships with Goodna in the mid-1970s and wore the green and white Ipswich jersey against Brisbane and Toowoomba.

"I started playing basketball in Ipswich purely for a bit of off-season fitness for football," he said. "Each basketball team had a duty night when they had to provide the referees so I picked up the whistle one night.
