Capitals SBL Split Round 3 Games at Home

The Brisbane Capitals SBL teams have split their round 3 games yesterday afternoon at NAB Stadium in a feast of high-level basketball action.

Both men’s and women’s SBL teams went into today’s game against cross-river rivals the Southern Districts Spartans with an imposing 2 – 0 record.

The young Capitals women’s outfit entered the first break down by only a single point 13 – 14 and tied the second quarter with the Spartans with 17 points each but the Spartans connected on 2 three-point bombs and poured in 22 points whilst holding the Capitals to 11 points in the third to run out 72 – 56 winners.

For the visitors, State representative Courtney Woods topped all scorers with a game high 19 points and for the Capitals, Abi Marsh and Jerica Lacey led the way with 12 and 11 points respectively.

“You never like to lose that’s for sure,” head coach Fiona Hannan expressed.

“But this young group really took it to one of the top teams in the league for the first half of the game. We’ll just chip away at training and address what we need to do to extend that time to a full game and see what happens,” she added.

In the men’s game, it took an “extra period” to separate these two SBL powerhouse teams who are sure to feature deep into the post season in August. The Spartans jumped to an early 6-point half time lead, which ballooned out to 13 points with 3 minutes left in regulation.

In typical Capitals fashion and a 2 – 0 record on the line, the boys dug deep. With just over 10 second left on the game clock, Jakob Stadler stole the ball, advanced it to Jake Davis who kissed the ball off the backboard for a layup which tied the game at 67 points with 7.6 second on the clock.

Spartans coach Sydney Mines called for an immediate time out to diagram a game winning play.

However, someone forgot to tell the Brisbane Capitals and centre Tom Malloy rejected not one but three Spartans attempts at the game winner.

The match went into overtime where the Capitals took full control for the 5 point win, 83 – 78 to advance to a 3 – 0 record.

The even point spread amongst the Capitals was once again the highlight of the win with five players hitting double figures. Tom Malloy led with 17 points, Tim Weigh and Jacob Wilson add 15 and 14 points respectively.

“It was our toughest challenge of the season so far and it was everything I expected and more. They are a great team and very well coached so to grind out the win after being down by as much as 13 points is very pleasing,” head coach Michael Van Dongen said.

“These guys have character and we’ll just keep working hard week in, week out and see what happened,” he concluded.

Next week the Brisbane Capitals take on cross-town rivals the Northside Wizards at Brendale. Both games tip off at 3pm.
