Capitals QBL Back to Winning Ways

The Brisbane Capitals QBL team have bounced back into the winner’s circle last night at NAB Stadium against round 1 opponent, the Toowoomba Mountaineers.

Without the services of Kristen Veal who is sidelined for three weeks with a hamstring injury and Brooke Steindl with the flu, you could be forgiven for thinking the backcourt may suffer in their absence, however that memo didn’t make it to the starting backcourt of Heidi Freeburn and Sarah Davis who combined for all 14 first quarter points with 6 and 8 points respectively.

The shackles were broken off in the second and third periods with the Capitals pouring in 48 points and restricting the visitors to just 30 points. Despite a 27-point final term from the Mountaineers the Capitals held for an 80 – 71 win.

Toowoomba import duo of Chelsie Schweers (25 points) and Kisha Lee (23 points including 15 in the final quarter and 13 rebounds) combined for more then half of their total points tally and were instrumental for their team but it was the Capitals point spread that proved the difference.

Five of them scored in double figures on the back of Davis and Freeburn who ended the game with 18 and 16 points each. Leeara Creet added 11 points and 7 rebounds with Jess Wallis and Molly Windor supporting with 10 points each.

“We got great contributions from everyone last night. Both Heidi and Sarah were outstanding and I’m more then happy with the way our group is heading,” Capitals head coach Kristen Veal offered.

In the last game of the huge day of SBL and QBL action last night, the Capitals had prepared for a tough re-match, despite round 1’s 40 point win in Toowoomba head coach Geoff Tarrant was expecting a much different team in round 3.

“I think we startled them in the first round and never really looked back but I know personally, no one like to get belted more then once so I was expecting a much tougher game especially with the addition of NBL import Willie Farley and the Dickerson boys,” he said.

“It was unfortunate they didn’t play as you always want to play against the best players you can but never the less, we’ll take the win and move forward,” he concluded.

The Capitals led at every break building on the foundation of a 12-point first quarter lead to run away with an all important, conference pool 27-point win, 101 – 74.

It was the Ryan Jeffries show last night as he scorched the visitors with 29 points and 10 rebounds with NBL legend Dusty Rychart narrowly missing out on a triple- double of 14 points, 13 rebounds and 9 assists.

The Capitals had four more players in double figures in another display of team basketball.

“They’re a tough team and when they are going to get some big wins when all hands are on deck. I’m more then happy to have them out of the way for the rest of the season,” Tarrant added.

For the visitors import prolific scorer James Legan had 27 points and 7 rebounds.

The Brisbane Capitals men and women’s team now move to a 2 – 1 win/loss record and will joining their SBL counterparts next week Brendale against the Northside Wizards.
