Capitals QBL Women sweep the Wizards

The Brisbane Capitals women have swept the back-to-back games against cross-town rivals, the Northside Wizards in “The Re-match” at NAB Stadium, Auchenflower last Saturday night with an emphatic 71 – 59 win.

Despite the visitors bursting out of the blocks and taking an early 25 – 18 point first quarter lead, the Capitals didn’t seem rattled at all on their home floor.

Wizard’s new import Aja Parham was on fire with 14 of her teams 25 points in the first quarter alone however the return of Kristen Veal from injury quickly doused that issue.

The second term was a tight affair with both teams only scoring 11 points each so the Wizards enjoyed a slender 7-point half time lead.

Whatever coach Veal said in the change room at the half worked and the Capitals sparked immediately with 3 quick baskets from Jess Wallis, Sarah Davis and Molly Windsor. Morgan Pink was fouled and the second made free throw gave the Capitals the lead for the first time.

Next play down the court Veal nailed one from down town with Heidi Freeburn following suit the very next play with her won long-range bomb. A sweet jump shot from the elbow from Freeburn again marked a 16 point run while restricting the visitors to just 9 points in the third term to lead 52 – 45 going into the last quarter.

Veal once again dropped another bomb midway through which proved the dagger in the Wizards for the runaway win, the Capitals third in a row.

“It’s very nice to be on some kid of win streak obviously,” head coach Kristen Veal said when asked about her team’s 4 – 1 record.

“We started slow again tonight but we grinded them out, we were patient and knew if we just did what we worked on, chip away, we’ll on that roll and open it up and we did that in the third tonight,” she said.

Heidi Freeburn led all Capitals with 19 points while fellow back court partner Sarah Davis continues her scintillating form with 12 points, 13 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals in what should push for the Round’s QBL Player of the Week award.

The Capitals are in prime position to extend on there 3 game winning streak next week taking on the winless Suncoast Clippers but will be weary to not take them lightly.

“I’ve said it before, there are no easy-beats in this league. Each and every week you have to bring you’re A game, or you’re going to get beat. It doesn’t matter if you’re number one playing the last placed team. Any team can win, any game so we won’t be taking anyone lightly,” Veal concluded.

The Brisbane Capitals host the Suncoast Clippers this coming Saturday night, 15 June at NAB Stadium, Auchenflower tipping off at 5:30pm.
