Capitals QBL – Split the Force

The Brisbane Capitals had mixed results in last night’s Round 7 QBL clash at NAB Stadium, Auchenflower with the women unable to extend their winning streak to 6 in a row losing to Ipswich Force 62 – 68 however the men have now won three in a row with a 95 – 61 demolition of the visiting Force team.

With player/coach Kristen Veal still away on Australian Opals duties, the Capitals didn’t seem fazed leading at every break of the game and enjoying a 7 point lead at the last break, 50 – 43.

The visitors were without one of their own stars away on National duties in Emma Langford, Veal’s Logan Thunder WNBL teammate.

However Ipswich Force player Nadeen Payne picked up the slack with 29 points. Twenty-one of them came in the second half and 13 in the last quarter as the tore the Capitals apart with 7 straight points then cool as a cucumber from the free-throw line to seal the win for the visitors.

Jess Wallis was instrumental in getting the Capitals off to a flying start with 8 quick first quarter points to finish the game with 16 points. As in previous games, the backcourt of Heidi Freeburn and Sarah Davis joined the party with 11 and 12 points respectively.

The men’s game brought much hype with the return of 7-foot centre Martin Iti to the Force line up. Last time these two teams met was in pre-season where the Force enjoyed a narrow win in overtime.

However in that game, both Dusty Rychart and Drew Eisinger did not play.

Last night Eisinger shot his way to 32 points including 6 from long range with Rychart adding 15 points and 10 rebounds.

The Capitals picked up from where they left off last weekend against the Gold Coast shooting their way to a 42 point first half while stifling the Force to just 31 points to enjoy an 11 point halftime lead.

Ryan Jeffries came to light in the third period with 9 points of the teams huge 32 point haul and once again strangling the Force allowing them just 14 points to extend the lead 74 – 45.

“It was great to finally show our home fans what we can do,” Capitals head coach Geoff Tarrant said.

“We’ve shot the ball nicely on the road, but haven’t really given our fans a taste of what we’re capable of.”

“I’m very pleased we were able to do that tonight,” he concluded.

The Capitals men’s and women’s teams will enjoy a bye next weekend before returning home on Friday 5 July hosting QBL powerhouse Cairns Dolphins and Cairns Marlins.
