SBL Players of the Week

The week six Women’s SBL Player of the Week has been awarded to Megan McKay of the Perry Lakes Hawks.

The Perry Lakes Hawks have been one of the biggest movers in 2015 currently sitting in fifth place on the standings while holding a current three game winning streak.

Head coach CJ Jackson has showed faith in many of his younger squad members including Megan McKay who was outstanding on the weekend to lead the Hawks to two wins in their weekend double header.

On Friday night the Hawks faced off against 2014 grand finalists the Lakeside Lightning with Mckay leading all scorers to record 19 points to go with 13 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals as the Hawks won 78 to 63.

Saturday night posed a further challenge for the Hawks as they hosted the red hot South West Slammers at the WA Basketball Centre.

Again McKay led all scorers to record 22 points which came from an impressive 9 of 11 from the field while pulling down 6 rebounds as the Hawks defeated the Slammers 61-57.

At 191cm and just 18 years of age, Megan has already represented WA at state level every year from 2010 and was a member of the Australian Under 17’s team in 2013.

The duo of McKay and import Kassi Conditt makes for one of the better front courts in the league and if their early form continues, the Hawks will go a long way to booking their spot in this year’s playoffs.

Other considerations for the award included;

Ashleigh Grant (Lakeside), Deanna Smith (Cockburn), Kate Fielding (South West), Samantha Whitcomb (Rockingham), Courtney Byrnes (Lakeside), Melissa Moyle (Kalamunda), Rebecca Mercer (Joondalup), Chelsea Burns (Joondalup), Gabriella Clayton (Perth), Casey Mihovilovich (Mandurah), Madeleine Dennis (Kalamunda), Ashley Sidebottom (Mandurah) & Darcee Garbin (Rockingham).

The week six Men’s SBL Player of the Week has been awarded to Gavin Field of the Soprano Designs Cockburn Cougars.

The Cougars continue to impress this season currently sitting in sixth position on the SBL standings with a record of 5 wins and 4 losses.

On Saturday night the Cougars pulled off the upset of the season so far, defeating the star studded line-up of the Joondalup Wolves in overtime at Wally Hagan Stadium 104 to 99.

The surprise win was on the back of a standout performance from Gavin Field who was outstanding for the home side with a game high 29 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists, 5 steals and 4 blocks.

On Sunday the Cougars travelled down the freeway to Mandurah where they just fell short of pulling off the weekend double, eventually going down to the Magic 114 to 109.

Field was again impressive filling up the stats sheet with 19 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals and 3 blocks.

Newly appointed coach Matt Parsons has done a great job so far this season with his group and now has the Cougars well and truly in the mix for this year’s playoffs.
