Giants break duck; Slammers make it a double (Week 7 Sunday SBL wrap)

THE South West Slammers recorded men's and women's SBL victories on Sunday while the Goldfields Giants got their first win of the season and handed the defending champion East Perth Eagles a ninth straight defeat.

The lone Sunday fixture over the Anzac Day weekend in the women's SBL saw the Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers defeat the Soprano Designs Cockburn Cougars 81-58 at Eaton Recreation Centre.

There were then two men's fixtures on Sunday with the Silver Lake Resources Goldfields Giants beating the Vorian Agency East Perth Eagles 106-97 at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre, and the Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers downed the Soprano Designs Cockburn Cougars 112-100 at Eaton Recreation Centre.

The women's clash to start the day saw the Slammers record a comfortable 23-point win over the Cougars at home to see them stop a four-game losing streak that came on the back of winning the opening four matches of the season.

The Slammers dominated the first half and had all but put the game to bed at half-time leading 53-24 at the main break before cruising to the eventual 81-58 victory.

Deanica McCormick led the way for the Slammers finishing the game with 24 points, seven assists, six rebounds and three steals on the back of shooting 12-of-22 from the field.

Kelly Bastow added 16 points for South West also while shooting a perfect 4-of-4 from three-point territory and Brittany Gliddon contributed 15 points, four rebounds and two steals, and Patricia Bright recorded a double-double with 11 points, 10 boards and three assists.

Kate Fielding finished with five points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals for the Slammers.

Katie Loberg top-scored for Cockburn with 13 points and five rebounds with Abbie McDonald adding 11 points, three boards and two assists.

Then in the men's SBL matches on Sunday, the Slammers backed up the winning performance of their women by also recording a 12-point victory over the Cougars.

Tre Nichols delivered a stunning offensive performance for the Slammers with 48 points, three rebounds and three steals on the back of shooting 17-of-28 from the floor, 5-of-10 from downtown and 9-of-12 from the free-throw line.

Brian Voelkel then delivered his third triple-double of the season with 17 points, 24 rebounds and 10 assists also for South West.

Playing-coach Ty Harrelson contributed 22 points and seven assists as well while Clive Weeden scored 13 points and pulled in five boards.

Gavin Field top-scored for the Cougars with 33 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and two blocked shots while hitting 11-of-18 from the floor and 6-of-8 from three-point range.

Najee Lane contributed 26 points and 11 rebounds for Cockburn with Eric Milam 18 points, seven boards, three steals and two assists.

And then the Giants won their first game of 2015 following losing their opening eight matches while the defending champion Eagles are now on a nine-game losing streak since winning their first game of their championship defence.

Jacob Holmen was the star of the evening for the Giants finishing with 43 points and 15 rebounds while shooting 17-of-31 from the floor and 8-of-9 from the charity stripe.

Mathiang Muo added 24 points and seven rebounds against the team he helped win last year's SBL championship, and he shot 6-of-12 from the field and 3-of-5 from three-point territory.

Jay Bowie contributed 18 points, 11 rebounds and five assists for Goldfields while Shamus Ballantyne had nine points, eight assists and five boards off the bench.

Joe-Alan Tupaea added 17 points for East Perth with Drew Williamson contributing 16 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Sunday Dech scored 17 points for the Eagles as well while Jamie Barnett added 11 points and Brighton Pass 10.
