Slammers appoint former International coach for 2010

Basketball South West (BSW) has confirmed the SBL coach appointments for season 2010.

Russell Upton has been re-appointed as coach of the Women’s team. The Men’s team will be coached by experienced Canadian coach David Petroziello.

BSW Chairman, Ian Telfer is confident that both appointments will bring success for the Slammers next season. Mr Telfer said “Russell Upton did a great job with the Women’s team in 2009 and the Board is really pleased he re-applied for the role.”  “We are excited about the potential of our Women’s squad under Russell’s guidance and leadership”.

David Petroziello has over 13 years coaching and basketball experience including his recent role as Head Coach of the Vancouver Titans, a professional team playing in the US based (West Coast) International Basketball League. He brings substantial high performance and development coaching expertise, together with his knowledge gained from coaching professional players in a high quality league.

“David’s experience developing young players together with managing a professional playing squad is an opportunity for the Men’s team to develop and grow as it pursues its goal of SBL success” said Mr Telfer.

The quality and quantity of applicants for the coaching positions shows that the SBL coaching role, and the BSW program, is widely recognised as a sought after opportunity for experienced basketball coaches from outside of Bunbury.

“We were very pleased with the standard of applicants and the decision on appointments was not easy.” “However the Board is very confident that the two coaches appointed will make a significant contribution to our SBL program and basketball development across the region”.

“We also wish to acknowledge the contribution of Tony Deighton as his contract as MSBL coach for the past 2 seasons comes to an end”.
