Flood Gates Remain Open in Recruitment Drive

Stirling Senators secured their third player in an intense recruitment period with confirmation that boom NSW youngster and ex-Flames development player Sheraton Flood is set to reject the lure of ABA competition by committing to the Club for 2010.

Flood, currently training with the Perth Lynx, has decided to place her basketball future with the Senators during the SBL season and reunite with new Lynx Assistant coach Vlad Alava. The pair had previously worked together back east, where both won 2 ABA titles (2007 and 2009) and Under 18 NSW State Championship in 2008. The 17 year old was also a member of successive NSW Metropolitan teams since 2006 through to this year’s U18 Nationals in Gawler, SA. She is currently trialling for a spot on the U20 Western Australian team while also honing her skills under the tutelage of the Lynx coaching staff.

Despite not turning 18 until May next year, the Stirling coach is confident that Flood will make an impact in the local league.

“Sherry has been training at an elite level since she was 15. She was with the WNBL Flames team full-time 2 years ago and despite her young age has played close to 50 ABA games. Add on to that she ran the backcourt of my ABA teams with Opals player Alicia Poto for the last 2 years and that is very solid grounding. It’s a delicate situation with her being so young, but her challenge and skill levels warranted her playing up. She really does epitomise the saying old enough if good enough.”

Flood, who has family in Western Australia, moved west to pursue basketball interests and a change of environment from her Sydney upbringing and readily admits the move has been made a lot easier with her family and Alava’s presence in a new environment.

The youngster had already been sounded out by ABA clubs back in NSW for next season but feels that playing her basketball in WA will be more beneficial for development. “She has some goals she wants to achieve and in many ways, she doesn’t need to impress me or the rest of NSW, she needs to impress everybody else who doesn’t know her- all of WA. She loves a challenge and she’s up for this one.”
