Stephanie courts big dreams

WILLETTON teenager Stephanie Cornwall has come a long way in her basketball career in just six years.

The Willetton Senior High School student has capped off another stellar season, in which she made her debut for the Lakeside Lightning WSBL side, by winning two Most Valuable Player awards and achieved selection in the All Star State school team for the third time.

The 15-year-old was named the Lightning’s under-16 MVP and took out the WA Basketball League’s MVP award for this season.

Stephanie said the experience of playing against bigger, more seasoned opponents would bode well for her lofty ambitions.

“I suited up for every game, but didn’t always get lots of court time because it depended on the tempo of the game,” she said.

“Just the experience of sitting on the bench and listening to my coaches was a very valuable experience.

“I liked the challenge of playing with players who were at a higher level than me, as it made me play a harder, stronger game.

“I learnt you need to be focussed all the time on the court as the game can turn over really fast.”

Stephanie also plays for the Jets in the Willetton domestic league.

But she has much higher goals to achieve in the next few years.

“I am aiming to head over to the US or Canada to play college basketball after I finish Year 12,” she said.

“I would also love to play for the Perth Lynx one day.”
