SBL MVP Meyer heads over East

GERALDTON Buccaneers have failed to lure the services of American workhorse Luke Meyer for the 2010 season.

Meyer, who was crowned WA State Basketball League MVP last season, is believed to have signed for the Bendigo Braves in the South East Australian Basketball League.

Buccs’ recruitment manager Scott Rubery said Meyer was a high priority after his stellar 2009 season.

He said the small forward will big a big loss.

“We were obviously keen to get Luke back on board for next season,” said Rubery.

“Its not often that a player comes a long and has debut season like he did.

“We offered him a contract but unfortunately he has decided to pursue his options elsewhere.”

Meyer received high acclaim for his debut year in the SBL. His season tally of 803 points saw him top the points scorers list along with teammate Michael Le Blanc.

Meyer thanked the Buccs for the offer to sign for another year.

“I want to thank the Buccs for the opportunity to return in 2010 but after discussing it with my partners and my family I have decided to go in a different direction,” said Meyer.

Meyer said it was a hard decision to and he thanked everyone at the club.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Geraldton and the people surrounding the Club which made this choice especially tough,” he said.

“I wish the Buccs continued success in the future.”

Meanwhile, Rubery said Meyer’s fellow countryman LeBlanc will be another omission from coach Ray Evans’ lineup.

Rubery said LeBlanc, who is currently playing in Singapore was not offered another deal for 2010.

“Michael did not feature in our plans for next year,” said Rubery.

“We would like to thank him for efforts and we wish him all the best in the future.”

Rubery said he is in the process of eyeing up a number of imports for the next year. He said a utility player is high on the list.

“We have got a number of roles we want to look at,” he said.

“But we’re eager to get a solid utility player.”

“Myself and Ray will sit down and look at our local players and see which areas need strengthening.”
