Sun shines on Kalamunda basketballer

THEY call him the “chosen one” and bearing down the basketball court with 10 tattoos, speed and a serious passion for the game, Kenny Brunner embodies the Kalamunda Eastern Suns’ hopes for 2010 and beyond.

The new US recruit trains for the first time with his new team in Lesmurdie today, and is keen to make this home for the next two years.

At 180cm, he’s not the tallest player, but has speed, experience and a tale of emerging from a chequered past that he is eager to share to help keep local youth on the straight and narrow.

As a rising star in high school basketball in Los Angeles, Brunner was handpicked for Georgetown University. But his promising career “was put on hold”, when in 1997 he was charged with attempted murder and assault.
