Creek part of new era (Includes Video)

New Goldfields Giants head coach Wayne Creek does not envisage any major problems calling the shots alongside several former team-mates in the State Basketball League next season.

Creek was officially appointed to the top job earlier this month and while he welcomes input from within the squad, says any team decisions will ultimately be made by one person – him.

Creek will oversee six Australian members of the Giants’ 2007 championship team, of which he was a member, plus import Michael Haney who is set to re-sign.

“We are ex-team-mates and friends,” Creek said.

“I’ve been around long enough to see these guys (Ryan Hulme, Todd Earle and Jimmy Bowler) all grow up and seen them debut about 10 years ago when I was midway through my career.

“We are friends, but at the end of the day they are the leaders of this group and they know what is expected of them.

“I know what I expect of myself and we need to be on the same page. I’ll have an open door policy.
“The bottom line is I’m the coach and I’m the one who makes the decisions – good, bad or otherwise. That’s how it’s got to be because it’s my neck on the chopping block or getting a pat on the back – whatever happens.

“I’ve got a good rapport with the playing group and from day one they’ve been training hard. The general feeling is very positive and I’ve been very impressed.”

After four seasons under Stephen Charlton, Creek’s appointment ushers in a new era for the Giants.
