Daniel (DJ) Johnson Returns to Tigers in 2010

The Willetton Tigers are pleased to announce the signing and return of Willetton junior Daniel “DJ” Johnson for the upcoming 2010 SBL Season.

Daniel is presently playing for the Melbourne Tigers and is an intricate piece in their quest for back-to-back NBL championships. He is averaging 10.5ppg and 4.5rpg for the season in arguably the hottest team in the NBL who are looking to overcome a poor start and injury issues and make the 2010 playoffs.

His career highs in the NBL are 20 points against Townsville and 12 rebounds against Cairns after being heavily relied upon in the absence of Chris Anstey.

Daniel completed a year at NCAA Division One University of Pepperdine in 2007-2008 before joining the Melbourne Tigers programme, both NBL and VBL where he has been for the past two years.

DJ will arrive at the completion of the NBL season.

Coach Hampel is excited about the return of Johnson to the club in 2010.

“This is a great coup for the club to secure the return of DJ after an extended period away. At 6’10 and about 100kg, he will add some much needed size to our lineup. The best thing is that it is some more home grown talent coming home and it will be exciting to have him in a Willetton uniform again. I am sure he is looking forward to playing with his younger brother Josh as well.”

Pairing him with import Ty Shaw is an exciting prospect. Plus he will impart valuable knowledge and experience onto the four or five up and coming junior forwards at the Club as well as we endeavour to fast track their development. We have made a concerted effort to comprise the 2010 squad of local Willetton products and DJ is another piece in that puzzle.

The SBL season kicks off in March and is preceded by the Pre-season tournament in late February. The squad has been training hard with the final makeup of the squad to be confirmed in late January.
