Buccs need fast start

GERALDTON'S Sun City Plumbing Buccaneers open their 2010 State Basketball League campaign on the road against South West Slammers and Mandurah Magic.

The Buccs season kicks off on March 13. Their first home game is against their 2009 nemesis Wanneroo Wolves on Saturday, March 20.

Last year's quarter finalists accounted for the Buccs both home and away last season in round six and 15. Coach Ray Evans believes a winning start is paramount, with only three of the Buccs opening nine games played at home.

"We really need a good start," he said. "The first two months will dictate how our season goes." "With having so few games at home we need to get the confidence up early with good wins on the road as well as at home."

Evans' men face a stern match-up in their second game at Tip Top against SBL title holders Lakeside Lightning on March 27.

The Buccs brushed the champions aside 115-85 in round three last year, but Lakeside turned the tables in round 12 before dumping the Buccs out of the semi finals in a 2-0 series sweep.

Captain Matt Wundenberg said the team was out to avenge last year's poor record against the champions.

"Lakeside have traditionally been the most professional team in the competition," said Wundenberg.

"There's no better team to come against to gauge where we're at early in the season."

"The two losses hurt us in the semis last year so we haven't forgotten about that."

The Easter weekend see the Buccs travel to Perth to play East Perth Eagles and Willetton Tigers.

A true test of will lies on the Foundation Day weekend with a tough triple header beginning against Lakeside on the road.

Rockingham Flames will be the next team in line, followed by last year's quarter final opponents Cockburn Cougars.

Willetton Tigers, 2009 grand finalists Perry Lakes and East Perth all travel to Tip Top for the Buccs final three home games before the finals.
