Caporn scores AIS Scholarship

The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) recently announced the latest recruits in its National Coach Scholarship Program (NCSP) with Australian Central Eagles’ 2009 SBL Coach, Adam Caporn named.

The NCSP is a progressive national training and development pathway for emerging Australian high performance coaches. It provides practical hands-on coaching experience supported by an experienced mentor, a professional development plan tailored to the needs of each scholarship coach, as well as the opportunity to undertake a post graduate qualification in sports coaching.

In an interesting turn of events Caporn will return to the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra where he was a scholarship holder in 2000 and 2001 and will also team up with his former AIS Assistant Coach, Martin Clarke. Clarke, who will be one of Caporn’s mentors in the program, has been the AIS Head Coach since 2003 and was recently appointed an Assistant Coach for the National Men’s Team.

East Perth District Basketball Association gave Caporn his first experience as a Head Coach when they appointed him in October 2008. As reported at that time his strong basketball knowledge and playing experiences lent itself to coaching. This was reinforced by Perth Wildcats CEO, Nick Marvin who at that time said “Adam Caporn is by far one of the smartest basketball minds around. He has exceptional perspective of the game and is a natural coach.”

Unfortunately for the Eagles, Caporn advised in October 2009 that he wanted to pursue interstate coaching experience whilst supporting his partner, Carly Wilson, who had signed with the Canberra Capitals in the Women’s National Basketball League.

The Eagles are pleased that Adam has found the interstate coaching experience he was looking for, and in the same city as Wilson.

East Perth District Basketball Association’s Managing Director, Brett Nazzari said “We are very pleased that Adam has been able to secure a National Coach Scholarship, and one that sees him in the same city as Carly. Adam is highly regarded by everyone at the Eagles and we wish him all the best in his next phase of his coaching career. ”
