Hawks Star Heads East
Smith has been a key member of the Flames resurgence in 2010 helping lead the team to a second place finish during the regular season. She is averaging 16.6 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game and will be looking to take her current team deep into the finals before joining the Lady Cobras.
Having hit top form at the right time of the WNBL Season, Smith scored 30 points and pulled down 9 rebounds against Lauren Jackson and the Canberra Capitals on 23 January 2010.
Smith is the final piece for the Lady Cobras roster joining Flames team mates Deanne Butler and Ellie Manou, former AIS player Alice Kunek and a wealth of youth and experience at the Club.
Smith has an impressive basketball resume including numerous WNBL Championships and overseas contracts, she will surely be a leader for the Lady Cobras and help teach some of the young Lady Cobras, “I will bring experience and leadership to the team as well as a strong work ethic,” said Smith.
“I would almost say I am a veteran these days, so it will be important for me to not only lead by example but assist those around me in any way I can, to help them achieve their best.”
For Smith personally the 2010 SEABL Season will give her a chance to continue working on her game while helping the team win, “I am looking forward to continuing to work on things I have been focusing on in Sydney. Kilsyth will be a positive environment where I will enjoy playing which is really important.”
Smith also believes the Sydney combination will be advantageous for the Lady Cobras, “We have had a season playing with each other and we get along really well. We know how each other plays and will only continue to work on this during the SEABL season. Kilsyth have a well balanced team and whilst three of us have played together, it is going to be important to get some training together as a team so that we can gel. With some hard work on the floor we can become a tough unit!” concluded Smith.
Swinburne Lady Cobras Head Coach Cheryl Chambers is expecting Smith to bring Kilsyth the same scoring power she brings the Flames. “Deanna can score lots of different ways; she can knock down the three, take it off the dribble, catch & shoot and after the ball has been shot, she attacks the boards. She is a superb rebounder for her size,” said Chambers.
“Now we have completed our roster I’m looking forward to getting all the girls on court at one time! The girls who are already on the floor are training well & improving - I’ve been impressed, so I’m looking forward to some exciting times ahead!” concluded Chambers in anticipation of the Season beginning.
