Tigers & Cougars take Blitz title

An outstanding display from forward Marc Jones saw Willetton Tigers defeat Stirling Senators 66-58 in the grand final of the men’s SBL Pre-Season Blitz tournament.

In the women’s final, Cockburn Cougars impressed from start to finish as it beat Kalamunda Eastern Suns 57-43.

Willetton was in control throughout the men’s final, taking an eight point lead into half-time and maintaining that gap for most of the match.

Jones led the way for the Tigers with 26 points and 11 rebounds, while centre Daniel Johnson, recruited from NBL club Melbourne Tigers, contributed 16 points and nine assists.

Willetton’s superior shooting was a big factor in its victory, as it made 55% of its field goals and 83% of its free throws, compared to just 47% and 50% respectively for Stirling.

Justin Eckhardt had 17 points and Will Foster got 12 for the Senators, who were beaten in every major statistical category.

Tonya Matthews was the star player for Cockburn, as she had 18 points and 13 rebounds in its victory in the women’s final.

The Cougars outshot Kalamunda 70% to 65% from the free throw line, while the Suns hit a dismal 25% of their field goal attempts, compared to Cockburn’s 40%.

Cockburn led by just three at the main break, but an 18-8 third quarter saw it run away with the game and record a comfortable victory.

Adrienne Jones was Kalamunda’s top scorer with 15 points, while Bek Leubner grabbed 10 rebounds.

In the men’s third place playoff, Perth Redbacks defeated Wanneroo Wolves 88-61.

The eventual losers led by four at quarter time but were outscored 69-38 from that point to see the Redbacks complete annihilation of Wanneroo.

Jon Meriweather was the top scorer for Perth with 26 points while Perth Wildcats development player Jarrad Prior had 22. The Wolves’ best performer was Reece Langford, who scored 16 points.

Meanwhile, Lakeside Lighting held off a final quarter comeback from Mandurah Magic to win the women’s third place playoff 39-37.

Lakeside led by eight at half-time and seven with one period remaining, only for Mandurah to have a stunning revival. However, a clutch three-point shot by Courtney Bayliss with 21 seconds remaining ensured victory for Lakeside.

Bayliss, Jennifer Kent and Alicia Stevenson all scored seven points for the Lightning, while Tarsha Feltcher top scored for Mandurah with 10.
