Slammers to rise to challenge

Basketball South West regrets to advise the basketball public that men’s State Basketball League coach, David Petroziello tendered his resignation last night.

Petroziello spoke to his coaching staff before breaking the news to the players and later the Board of Basketball South West. The season is due to start this weekend with a tough double header – the Slammers play the Flames at Rockingham on Friday night before fronting up to the Geraldton Buccaneers at home on Saturday night.

Assistant Coach Carl Catalano will take over as Coach in an acting capacity, pending further consideration by the BSW Board.

Basketball South West Chairman, Steve Hawkins, expressed his disappointment in David’s decision but is confident the Club will act quickly to move forward positively into the season.

“David came to the Club with a wide variety of coaching experience and an exuberant approach to training. Players and coaches have benefitted from being exposed to different ideas and presentation.

The challenge for the team now is to remain focused and continue to prepare for the first game.”

In his letter of resignation, Petroziello recognized the efforts of current squad members, saying.

“I want it officially noted that the group of players which has assembled to represent Basketball South West for 2010 have dedicated themselves to improving their performance and understanding of the game."

"I want to thank them for their efforts and dedication, as well as the coaching staff for responding so professionally to my demands and expectations.” He said.

Basketball South West Board and Committee members will continue to work together with acting Coach Catalano and the assistant coaches to launch the 2010 SBL campaign on Friday at Rockingham before hosting the Buccaneers on Saturday night.
