Redbacks open with two wins

The Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks’ women’s and men’s teams won their opening 2010 State Basketball League games against the Cockburn Cougars.

The women won 45 to 33 points and the men 108 to 90 in the home games played last Saturday night at the Belmont Oasis Leisure Centre in front of a crowd of over 250 people.

Brooke Hiddlestone celebrated her 300-game milestone in style by being the selected as the Redbacks’ most valuable player after amassing 18 points and bringing down 18 rebounds. In doing so she was also awarded the Len Vlahov Memorial Award given to the best Redbacks’ player in the first home game of each season. Shooting guard Kerise Delcoure was their second-highest scorer with 8 points.

Playing Coach Narelle Henry also celebrated a milestone of 200 games. Henry has previously played in the US College system, played and coached for the Perth Lynx in the Women’s National Basketball League and won the Western Australian Indigenous Sports Star of the Year Award.

Redbacks’ guard and Perth Wildcat player Jarrad Prior won the Vlahov Award for the men’s team after scoring 21 points at a field goal percentage of 57 as well as bringing down 5 rebounds and making 3 steals. United States import and excitement machine Jon Meriweather stunned the crowd with a range of massive dunks and ‘alley-oops’ in amassing 20 points along with 7 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks.

The Redbacks next games will be played against the tough Perry Lakes Hawks men’s and women’s combinations at Belmont Oasis this Friday starting 6.30PM.
