Redbacks win double against Hawks

The Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks’ State Basketball League (SBL) teams won their home games against the Perry Lakes last night.

The Redbacks’ men’s team led the Hawks throughout the game with the final score being 117 to Hawks 87. The strong win was set up by their scoring 37 points in the first quarter and coming in with an 18-point lead.

Coach David Harris attributed the win to an overall consistent team effort, but made special mention of the back-court defensive effort by Wildcats’ players and Redbacks’ guards Jarrad Prior and Joel Wagner as exampled by their combined tally of 11 steals.

Harris named Prior as the team’s best player on the night for his contribution of a game-high 26 points along with 7 steals, 3 assists, 3 rebounds and 1 blocked shot. However, Wagner was hot on his heels having scored 17 points along with 10 assists, 7 rebounds and 4 steals.

Jon ‘excitement machine’ Meriweather continues to stun the crowds with his athleticism and basketball prowess with what was one of the biggest dunks seen at an SBL game. He scored 21 points at a field goal percentage of 67 as well as bringing down 5 rebounds.

Veteran shooting guard Ryan Neill scored 20 points along with bringing down 5 rebounds, while small-forward Robert Cassir scored 11 points and had 9 rebounds. Power forward Reece Dempster scored 10 points at a field goal percentage of 57 and had 8 rebounds.

The Redbacks’ women’s team beat the strong Perry Lakes team 71 to 58 points. Playing-coach Narelle Henry was pleased with the ability of the team to control the game tempo and intensity, demonstrated by the fact that they led from early in the second quarter onwards.

Forward Frances Clarke was named by Henry as the team’s best player in scoring 16-points at a field goal percentage of 70, which included two three-point shots, as well as bringing down 8 rebounds.

Veteran centre Brooke Hiddlestone again contributed solidly with 18 points and 16 rebounds, while Henry scored 8 points as well as bringing down 5 rebounds, making 9 assists and 1 steal.

Shooting guard Kerise Delcoure scored 11 points at a field goal percentage of 50 as well as bringing down 3 rebounds and making 2 assists, while Yasmin Lewis scored 6 points as well as bringing down 3 rebounds.

Both the Redbacks’ men’s and women’s teams have two wins and no losses and are sitting in second place on the SBL ladder.
