Magic put spell on Redbacks

Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks lost both of their away games against Mandurah Magic in the State Basketball League last Saturday night.

The Redbacks’ women lost 47 to 52 points in their tough encounter against last year’s grand finalists. Forward and 2009 league most valuable player Brooke Hiddlestone was the Redbacks’ dominant player in scoring 19 points at a field goal percentage of 70 along with 22 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.

Shooting guard Kerise Delcoure was their next highest scorer with 6 points along with 3 assists. Playing-coach Narelle Henry, who fouled out of the game late in the second quarter, scored 5 points as well as making 5 assists and bringing down 4 rebounds.

Small forward Latoya Wallace scored 5 points along with 2 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 assists while shooting-guard Yasmin Lewis also scored 5 points together with 5 steals, 4 assists and 2 rebounds.

At the end of round 2 the Redbacks’ women’s team are in 3rd place in the 12-team competition with a season record of 2 wins and 1 loss.

In a high scoring encounter the Redbacks’ men lost to the Magic 101 to 119. USA import Jon Meriweather continued his impressive early season form in scoring 36 points as well as bringing down 13 rebounds and making 3 blocked shots.

In a demonstration of his commitment to hard work ethic, particularly around the basket, Meriweather conceded only 3 fouls in his 48 minutes on the court whilst having 10 fouls committed on him.

Centre Michael Vigor scored 18 points as well as bringing down 14 rebounds while small forward Robert Cassir had 15 points, 5 assists, 3 rebounds and 1 steal.

Shooting guard and former league most valuable player Ryan Neill scored 19 points at a field goal percentage of 70 along with 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal.

The loss sees the Redbacks’ men with 2 wins and 1 loss and in 4th position in the 14-team competition.

The Redbacks’ men will look forward to the return of Wildcat’s players Jarrad Prior and Joel Wagner, who did not play last night due to their National Basketball League commitments, in this Saturday night’s tough away encounter against the Kalgoorlie Giants. The women’s team has a bye.
