Redbacks can't end drought

Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks men’s State Basketball League team lost in a tough away encounter against the Goldfields Giants 105 to 117 points.

In a tight tussle that saw the lead change 17 times the Redbacks were only one point behind at the end of the third quarter. However a 45-point last quarter effort by the Giants in front of an ecstatic home crowd ensured their victory.

It also ensured that the Redbacks did not break a losing streak in Kalgoorlie that extends back to 1999.

Game-high scorer was the Giants’ point guard Ryan Hume with 31 points at an impressive field goal percentage of 67, which included 14 points in the last quarter.

Former league most valuable player Ryan Neill top scored for the Redbacks with 28 points along with 11 rebounds.

Redbacks’ shooting guard Jarrad Prior also scored 28 points along with four assists and four steals.

Forward and US import Jon Meriweather scored 17 points at a field goal percentage of 63, while small-forward Robert Cassir scored 10 points at an impressive 80%. Redbacks’ point guard Joel Wagner scored nine points along with nine assists and Centre Michael Vigor also scored nine points as well as bringing down six rebounds and making three assists.

The loss sees the Redbacks with a season record of two wins and two losses and in 7th position in the 14-team competition.

The Redbacks’ women’s team returns to action this Saturday night following their week off and will play the Rockingham Flames at the Belmont Oasis Leisure Centre with tip-off at 6PM.

The men’s game starts at 8PM and will see the Redbacks’ 22-year-old Perth Wildcats duo of Jarrad Prior and Joel Wagner celebrate their 150th and 100th State Basketball League games respectively.
