Week Three Women's Wrap

Rockingham Flames’ unbeaten start to the season ended with a 67-73 loss to south metropolitan rivals Mandurah Magic in week three of the women’s State Basketball League.

The Magic led by 17 at half-time but held off a fierce Rockingham comeback to win, despite being outrebounded 27-16 and turning the ball over 11 times in the second half.

Casey Milhovilovich continued her outstanding season, leading Mandurah to victory with 16 points and seven assists.

Gail Eikhoudt was Rockingham’s best with 20 points and four steals, while Kaye Tucker had an uncharacteristically poor shooting night, hitting only 25 percent of her field goal attempts on her way to 13 points.

Rockingham’s slip allowed Australian Central East Perth Eagles to take top spot with an 88-74 win over Glasscraft Wanneroo Wolves.

Ashley Gilmore (23 points, 20 rebounds) and Samantha Norwood (19 points, 14 rebounds) were the best for the Eagles, while Rebecca Mercer had 25 for Wanneroo.

Wanneroo trailed for most of the match but fought back to reduce the margin to one early in the final quarter, but East Perth ran away with the match from there.

Earlier in the round, the Eagles defeated the Magic 83-67.

Gilmore had 33 points in that outing to lead her side to an impressive win, while Kelli Hayward had 24 points for Mandurah.

Southlands Boulevard Willetton Tigers got its season back on track with a 61-36 thrashing of AND1 Kalamunda Eastern Suns.

Both sides were sloppy, combining for 63 turnovers, but Melissa Marsh performed to her usual exceptional level with 16 points, five assists and five steals for Willetton.

Kalamunda scored only 12 points after half-time but Melissa Moyle was a solid contributor with 10 points.

Willetton moved to 2-1 for the season by defeating Total Connections Perry Lakes Hawks 73-64 the next night.

Marsh was outstanding with 24 points and seven boards while Kate Malpass had 12 points and 10 assists. Dana-Renae Jones top scored for the Hawks with 18.

Perry Lakes made light work of Carpet Court Southwest Slammers the night before though, winning 85-52.

The Hawks had 11 scorers but Tegan Walker led with 14 while Kate Fielding had 18 for Southwest, which shot only 31.7 percent from the field as a team.

Stirling Senators remain without a win despite a gallant performance in its 56-63 loss to Metropolis Fremantle Cockburn Cougars.

The Senators led by three at half-time and the scores were tied at the final break, but Cockburn ran away with it in the last period to deny Stirling only its second win since the start of the 2009 season.

Michelle Joy and Emily Fielding had 17 points each for Stirling, while Emma Pass and Ella Buckley each had 12 for the Cougars.

Cockburn didn’t fare as well the next night though, falling 56-76 to Wanneroo at home.

The Wolves led 28-6 at the first break and were never challenged from that point even though the Cougars managed to make the score more respectable.

Mercer was again Wanneroo’s best with 24 points. Buckley had 13 for the Cougars.
