Week Three Men's Wrap

Lakeside Lightning continued its outstanding start to the season with a 106-97 win at previously undefeated Sun City Plumbing Geraldton Buccaneers in round three of the men’s State Basketball League.

The Lightning moved to 4-0 with the impressive victory, leaving it top of the league as the only remaining undefeated team.

It recovered from a six point half time deficit to take the win, outscoring Geraldton 59-44 in the second half due to excellent shooting.

Luke Payne was outstanding for the victors once again with 34 points, while Ben Beran had 28 and 11 rebounds.

Ryan Zamroz continued his MVP calibre season for the Buccaneers with 34 points, six boards and four assists.

Southlands Boulevard Willetton Tigers capped a great weekend by beating Total Connections Perry Lakes Hawks 110-81 on Saturday night.

Townsville Crocodiles forward Cameron Tovey saw his first action of the season this weekend and was among the Tigers’ best in this match, with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Daniel Johnson, who is rumoured to be a Perth Wildcats target, had 30 points and 12 rebounds.

Tovey’s Townsville teammate Peter Crawford and Robert Kempf had 14 points each for Perry Lakes.

Willetton was similarly impressive the night before in a 97-72 win over AND1 Kalamunda Eastern Suns.

Johnson had 25 points and 17 boards for the Tigers, while former Wildcats centre Justin Brown had 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Suns.

Skilled Goldfields Giants went some way to making amends for two disappointing losses early in the season by defeating Southside Mitsubishi Perth Redbacks 117-105.

Second half fadeouts have plagued the Giants this year but it reversed that trend by outscoring Perth 69-54 after half-time, including 45 final quarter points, to take an important win.

Ryan Hulme had 29 points and John Vaudreiul 23 for the Giants while for Perth, Jarrad Prior and Ryan Neil scored 28 each.

Mandurah Magic caused somewhat of an upset by beating Rockingham Flames 96-76 in the southern suburbs derby.

The Magic’s strong defence ensured Rockingham made just 31.9 of its field goals, despite 23 points and 22 boards for Rhett Della Maddalena. Casey Crevelone top scored for the Magic once again with 27 points.

Mandurah didn’t fare as well the night before though, losing 77-90 to Australian Central East Perth Eagles.

Former Wildcats captain Paul Rogers made his Eagles debut and had 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists, while his inside partners Tom Jervis and Sam Harris also made large contributions.

Mandurah were outscored 44-59 in the second half despite the effort of Tom Remmerswaal, who had 23 points from 27 minutes.

East Perth moved into second spot with a 105-64 thrashing of Titan Interactive Wanneroo Wolves.

Jervis had 17 points and 14 rebounds for the dominant Eagles while Doug Gates top scored for the Wolves with 12 in limited minutes.

Stirling Senators recorded its first win of the season, beating Cockburn Cougars 88-72.

Geordie Cullen had 27 points and four blocks while Joe-Alan Tupaea scored 15 with 8 assists for Stirling. Bryce Burch was Cockburn’s best with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Cockburn fared better on Saturday night however, beating Wanneroo 96-90.

Gates’ 33 points were not enough for the Wolves, due mainly to Burch and Ben Stanley, who had 26 and 22 points respectively.

Perry Lakes comfortably accounted for Carpet Court Southwest Slammers in a 108-72 win, thanks in large part to Martin Vahala’s 15 points.

Aaron Edwards and Jeremy Paull had 15 points each for Southwest, which trailed by 28 at half-time.
