Redbacks take double against Flames

The Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks beat the Rockingham Flames in both State Basketball League games at the Belmont Oasis Stadium last night.

The score in the women’s game was the Redbacks 64 points to the Flames 56 points. Forward Brooke Hiddlestone top-scored for the Redbacks with 26 points along with 17 rebounds and four assists. Playing coach Narelle Henry led from the front in being their next highest scorer with 16 points along with five assists and three steals.

The win sees the Redbacks’ women move up one place on the ladder to third in the 12-team competition with a season record of three wins and one loss.

The Redbacks’ men’s team had a tough win in a dour encounter against the Flames 87 to 82. In his first game for the Redbacks, Perth Wildcats player and National Basketball League Rookie of the Year award winner Jess Wagstaff was the game-high scorer with 31 points along with 15 rebounds, two assists and four blocked-shots.

Shooting guard Ryan Neill was their next highest scorer with 24 points at a field goal percentage of 60, while point-guard Joel Wagner had 13 assists along with three steals and nine points.

The win sees the Redbacks’ men with a season record of three wins and two losses and in sixth place in the 14-team competition.

This Friday (9 April) the Redbacks will play the Kalamunda Eastern Suns at the Ray Owen Reserve in Lesmurdie, with the women’s game starting at 6.30PM and men’s game at 8.30PM.

They will then play the East Perth Eagles on Sunday (11 April) at the Belmont Oasis Stadium, corner Alexander Road and Abernethy Road Belmont with the women’s game starting at 11AM and the men’s game at 1PM.
