WSBL - Week Four in Review

Southside Mitsubishi Perth Redbacks moved to third spot with a 64-56 win over Rockingham Flames in round four of the women’s State Basketball League.

26 points and 17 rebounds from Brooke Hiddlestone, who played the entire match, and 16 points from Narelle Henry led the Redbacks to victory, taking it to 3-1 for the season.

Perth limited star Flames forward Kaye Tucker (11 points) to a 27.8 field goal percentage, while Casey Haggar top scored for Rockingham with 15 points.

Rockingham, who were without 2009 SBL Rookie of the Year Courtney Hargraves for family reasons, dropped to fourth place with the loss at 3-2.

Southlands Boulevard Willetton Tigers won its Grand Final rematch with Mandurah Magic 60-47.

Kate Malpass excelled for the Tigers with 18 points, seven rebounds and six assists while her Lynx teammate Melissa Marsh added 14 points despite a poor shooting night.

Casey Mihovilovich was once again Mandurah’s best with 17 points, but a lack of support for her led to the Magic’s downfall.

Australian Central East Perth Eagles held onto top spot above Willetton and Perth by defeating AND1 Kalamunda Eastern Suns 67-55.

Kelsey Maffin had 17 points to lead the Eagles, who beat Kalamunda 43-30 on the boards due to the work of Samantha Norwood (15 points, 11 rebounds) and Ashley Gilmore (nine rebounds).

Kalamunda fell to 1-4 and second last despite strong performances from Adrienne Jones and Melissa Moyle, who had 13 and 10 points respectively.

Glasscraft Wanneroo Wolves staged an amazing comeback to defeat Lakeside Lightning 62-60.

Wanneroo trailed by nine at the last break but outscored Lakeside 19-8 in the fourth quarter to win its second game of the year.

Rebecca Mercer continued her excellent season with 23 points for the Wolves, while Jessica Van Schie and Courtney Bayliss were Lakeside’s best with 16 and 15 points respectively.

Stirling Senators beat Carpet Court Southwest Slammers 68-49, its first win of the season.

Stirling outscored Southwest 41-21 in the first half and the Slammers were unable to get close after that.

Michelle Joy had 16 points and 17 rebounds for the Senators while Kate Fielding had 22 points to lead Southwest, which remains winless after four games.
