Pepper ready to go

BEN Pepper looks set to make his long awaited return with the Buccs for tomorrow night’s home clash against Rockingham Flames.

The seven-foot centreman has been training with Geraldton Sun City Plumbing Buccaneers for several weeks since returning to his home city.

Pepper said he was relishing every minute of being part of the Buccs camp again and was a “likely chance” to play. “I’ve still got a little bit work to do on the training track,” said the former NBL star.

“The sharpness is coming back slowly.”

“If Ray (Evans) wants me to play and I feel confident that I can contribute, then I should be a fair chance.” Coach Ray Evans said Pepper had made steady improvements in training.

“Ben’s trained well this week,” said Evans.

“He looks like he can play some part on Saturday but he wants to make sure he’s ready in himself first.”

“If he feels confident then he’ll play.”

Rockingham sit third bottom of the SBL with only one win in five games. The Flames face a race against the clock to have new import Demetrius Hazel cleared in time for the clash at Tip Top Stadium.

The Buccs go into the game on the back of a fortunate one-point win over Kalamunda last Saturday thanks to a late three-pointer by Luke Wrensted.

Buccs’ captain Matt Wundenberg said the team did not want to rely on Lady Luck’s wisdom against the Flames.

“We were obviously lucky to win last week so we’ve been working hard to get our plays right.” Hopefully this will put us in a position to win effectively,” he said.
